Replacement Engine Parts: Gaskets and Rebuild Kits
THE MAIN PARTS OF A CAR ENGINE AND HOW IT WORKS
Any internal combustion engine is made up of hundreds of parts that must work simultaneously to power a vehicle.
The ignition and combustion cycle that happens inside an internal combustion engine typically occurs in four strokes. This is why these engines are sometimes referred to as four-stroke engines. Stroke refers to the up-and-down motion of the pistons inside the engine block due to the rotation of the crankshaft.
The four strokes are:
- Intake stroke
- Compression stroke
- Combustion stroke
- Exhaust stroke
During the intake stroke, the pistons move downward and the timing belt or timing chain turns the camshaft in the cylinder head, which opens the intake valves. These deliver an air-fuel mixture into the cylinder. During the compression stroke, the pistons move upwards, and the air-fuel mixture is compressed in the combustion chamber. Next is the combustion stroke, when the spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture, creating the energy that powers the engine. This forces the piston to move down again in the exhaust stroke, during which the camshaft opens the exhaust valves to release the exhaust fumes through the cylinder head and out the tailpipe. The engine then restarts the cycle.
For this cycle to work, lubrication is required. The oil pump circulates engine oil under pressure to lubricate moving parts such as bearings, pistons, connecting rods, camshafts, and the crankshaft to prevent the engine from seizing. The oil pan is attached to the bottom of the engine block and is the reservoir for the oil pump.
If there's a problem with any of the steps above, the four-stroke engine cycle cannot be completed, and your car engine may seize and stop working.
