WHAT IS CAR STEERING & SUSPENSION?

Your car has two separate systems, a steering system, and a suspension system, that work together to help you better control your vehicle when driving. The suspension system is made up of front suspension and rear suspension parts and components to support the weight of your vehicle, and plays a crucial role in the stability, handling, and drivability of your vehicle. The steering system provides directional control of your car. All modern cars are equipped with power steering or electric steering, which are a part of your vehicle’s steering rack and is connected to your car steering wheel. You need both these systems working in A1 condition to ensure that you can maintain control of your vehicle and safely drive your car.

SIGNS YOUR STEERING OR SUSPENSION IS BROKEN

Normal driving creates wear and tear on your steering and suspension systems. Your ride might be suffering from a worn-out steering and suspension system if you are experiencing:

  • Rough vibrations.
  • Shaking steering wheel.
  • Locking or grinding while turning.
  • Lack of control or drifting when driving.
  • Clunking or banging noise when driving over bumps.
  • Squeaking or rattling noises from loose joints.

These issues are most likely coming from your front-end assembly, a combination of the vehicle’s steering and suspension: steering gear box, rack and pinions, tie rod ends, boots and sleeves, shocks, shock absorbers, struts, ball joints, control arms and pitman arm. If your chassis is sagging lower than the specification for your car, focus on replacing the springs, bushings, and top plate. You need both systems working in top condition to avoid instability in road handling, avoid excessive tire wear, and loss of ride comfort, steering control, and drivability.

HOW DO YOU INSPECT STEERING & SUSPENSION?

Your vehicle’s steering and suspension system should be inspected on a regular basis as you follow your car’s maintenance schedule to ensure that the parts are in proper working order. The best times to inspect your steering and suspension are:

  • Annually or every 80,000 kilometers.
  • During your next tire change.
  • When servicing your brakes system.
  • When changing your oil and filter.
  • If there is fluid leaking from your car.
  • When your car is on a lift or jack stands and your steering and suspension is accessible.
  • If you feel or hear your car showing irregular steering or suspension control or handling.

The replacement parts for a vehicle’s front and rear suspension are typically not included in the manufacturer’s warranty. Small parts for updating a vehicle’s steering and suspension include stabilizer links, drop links, and hardware. An overhaul of a vehicle’s steering and suspension will very likely require replacing large components such as the steering linkage assembly, sway bars and stabilizer sway bars. Many of these steering and suspension mechanisms must be changed in pairs and your car will need a wheel alignment after you install replacement parts. If you are considering replacing your vehicle’s steering and suspension parts, a NAPA Auto Parts store near you will carry suspension parts and tools for a variety of car, truck, and SUV models. If you need to have your steering and suspension systems inspected by a professional, find a NAPA AUTPRO near you and an experienced NAPA mechanic will help you diagnose your vehicle.
