What Is a Heavy Duty Vehicle?
Transportation Canada defines vehicle categories by their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This number includes the weight of the vehicle, passengers, cargo, and vehicle fluids.
The legal maximum GVWR for light duty vehicles in Canada, e.g., passenger cars, is 8,500 lbs. Vehicle classes 2B to 8 are heavy duty vehicles in Canada. On the light end, the maximum GVWR is 10,000 lbs for class 2B, which can include utility and step vans, and full-size pick-up trucks. Dump and cement trucks, heavy conventional tractor-trailers, and sleeper tractor-trailers have a GVWR of 33,000+ lbs. and comprise class 8.
What Are the Main Challenges for Heavy Duty Brake Systems?
Braking changes the vehicle's kinetic "moving" energy into heat energy that stops the vehicle safely. Stopping the weight that heavy duty vehicles carry requires brake components capable of dissipating enormous amounts of heat.
Passenger car brakes, for example, might reach 200°C during heavy use. By comparison, the temperature of heavy duty vehicle brakes can exceed 400°C. Therefore, heavy duty brakes require specialized materials, larger heat dissipation surfaces, and more robust construction throughout the entire braking system.
Canadian operating conditions add another layer of complexity. Your brake system must be able to handle everything from emergency stops on icy highways to controlled descents.
Understanding Heavy Duty Brake Components
Heavy duty brake assemblies rely on many components working together seamlessly. Heavy duty trucks can use any combination of drum brakes, disc brakes, and air brakes. Hydraulic braking systems-those that use braking fluid-usually comprise drum and disc brakes. Air brakes are used in heavy duty trucks higher in the GVWR classification system. They may contain disc or drum brakes, but other brake types work more effectively in an air brake system.
Brake Foundations
Rotors: Also known as brake discs, rotors provide the surface for disc brakes that calipers and pads apply friction to so the wheel can safely stop.
Calipers: Used in disc brakes, calipers house the brake pads.
Pads: Calipers squeeze the brake pads onto the disc to slow the vehicle down.
Drums: These bowl-shaped parts house the brake shoes in drum brakes. Because of their design, they tend to hold more heat than rotors. This affects how efficiently they dissipate heat.
Shoes: Brake shoes press outwardly against the drum's inner surface to bring the wheel to a stop. Each drum brake assembly has two.
Other Brake Components
Bushings: Acting like cushions between the calipers and pads, brake bushings reduce friction and noise, absorb vibrations, and help prevent metal-on-metal contact.
Hoses: Due to the vertical movement of the wheels, flexible hoses are used instead of rigid pipes to carry fluid either the caliper piston (disc brake) or wheel cylinder (drum brake).
Tubing: Also known as brake lines, brake tubing connects the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders.
Washers: These doughnut-shaped parts help distribute the load applied to a material from a nut or bolt.
Air Brake Systems
Air brake systems compress air to multiply stopping force across multiple axles. This is a pneumatic, not a hydraulic, system.
Air brake chambers and slack adjusters convert compressed air pressure into the mechanical force needed to apply brake shoes or pads against rotating surfaces. They use either cam brakes (specialized drum brakes for heavy duty vehicles), disc brakes, or wedge brakes.
Choosing the Right Components for Your Application
Friction material composition varies significantly across price ranges and applications:
Organic materials offer quiet operation and moderate cost, but may not withstand extreme temperature applications.
Semi-metallic compounds provide better heat resistance and durability at higher cost and potentially increased rotor wear.
Signs Your Heavy Duty Brakes Need Attention
Recognizing early warning signs can prevent minor maintenance issues from becoming major safety hazards or expensive repairs. Taking care of minor issues can also reduce the chances of your truck being pulled off the road in a safety inspection.
Heavy duty brake systems provide several clear indicators when service is needed, and understanding these signals can help you maintain both safety and operational efficiency.
Unusual noises during braking often indicate wear or damage:
- Grinding sounds typically signal brake pads or shoes that have reached their service limit.
- Squealing or chirping noises might indicate glazed brake surfaces or contaminated friction materials.
- Hissing can indicate air leaks in the brake system.
Pedal feel changes provide important diagnostic information.
For example, a soft or spongy brake pedal often indicates air in hydraulic portions of the system or worn brake chamber diaphragms. Excessive pedal travel before brakes engage suggests automatic slack adjusters aren't functioning properly.
Inspecting a Heavy Duty Vehicle
Apart from being a legal requirement in commercial vehicles, conducting a visual inspection can reveal many potential issues before they become critical. Brake fluid leaks, cracked air lines, and excessive corrosion on brake components are all visible signs that service is needed. Uneven tire wear patterns can also indicate brake imbalance issues that require professional diagnosis.
