Heavy-Duty Vehicle Batteries: Power for Commercial and Industrial Applications
If you rely on commercial vehicles, construction equipment, or industrial machinery for your job, you can't afford for the batteries to fail. Heavy-duty vehicle batteries provide strong power and long-lasting durability for tough jobs where being out of service costs money and reliability is crucial.
Understanding Heavy-Duty Vehicles and Their Power Needs
Transport Canada defines heavy-duty vehicles as those with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 4,536 kg (10,000 lbs). This includes delivery trucks, dump trucks, cement mixers, tow trucks, city buses, fire trucks, some pickup trucks, and industrial equipment.
These workhorses face challenges passenger vehicles rarely encounter:
- constant vibration from rough terrain

You Can Judge a Battery by Its Numbers
In addition to operating conditions, battery specifications form part of your decision on what battery to buy. These factors affect how the battery will operate in the conditions you and your heavy-duty vehicle find yourselves in.
Cold cranking amps (CCA) measure a battery's ability to start an engine at -18 °C(0 °F). Heavy-duty diesel engines with high compression ratios require substantially more cranking power than gasoline engines. Your heavy-duty vehicle may have a bank of starter batteries whose sole function is to provide a high CCA to crank the engine.
Reserve capacity (RC) indicates how long a fully charged battery can deliver 25 amps before dropping below minimum voltage. This specification matters when your vehicle needs to power lights, communication equipment, or auxiliary systems with the engine off. Higher RC provides more time before the battery requires recharging.
Amp-hour rating (Ah) measures how many amps a battery can deliver over a specific period. Heavy-duty applications with significant electrical loads benefit from higher amp-hour ratings to ensure adequate power for extended operations.
Cycle life becomes important when batteries regularly experience deep discharges, i.e., each time the battery has been drained of 80% of its charge. Standard starting batteries might handle only a few dozen deep discharge cycles, while quality AGM batteries designed for dual-purpose applications can withstand hundreds of cycles, making them more economical over the battery's lifetime despite higher initial costs.
Types of Heavy-Duty Batteries
Conventional flooded lead-acid batteries remain popular in heavy-duty applications because of their proven reliability and cost-effectiveness. These batteries contain liquid electrolyte and require periodic maintenance to check fluid levels and ensure proper charging. While they need more attention than sealed batteries, flooded lead-acid batteries offer excellent cold-cranking performance and can be rebuilt or reconditioned, extending their service life in commercial fleets where maintenance infrastructure exists.
Absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries are just that: fibreglass mats absorb the electrolyte between the plates, making these batteries spill-proof and maintenance-free. AGM batteries provide superior vibration resistance, handle deep discharge cycles better than conventional flooded batteries, and have faster recharge rates.
Gel cell batteries use a silica-based gel electrolyte that offers excellent deep-cycle performance. They are less common in heavy-duty vehicles than AGM batteries, but they excel where prolonged discharge periods or extreme temperatures are the norm. Furthermore, they have a slower discharge rate, which makes them suitable for powering accessories during extended idle periods.
Selecting the Right Heavy-Duty Battery
Weather Conditions
A dump truck operating in northern Alberta faces different challenges than a delivery truck in Vancouver's milder climate.
Consider the engine size and starting demands. For example, larger displacement engines and engines operating in northern climates need higher CCA ratings. Canadian weather makes cold-cranking performance especially important.
Auxiliary Power Requirements
Evaluate your auxiliary power requirements. Does your vehicle operate refrigeration units, hydraulic systems, power inverters, or communication equipment? These accessories draw power continuously and require batteries with substantial RC and deep-cycle capabilities. Vehicles with multiple electrical accessories often benefit from dual-battery systems-one dedicated to engine starting, another handling auxiliary loads.
Operating Environment
Construction equipment, for example, faces constant vibration and potential impact that can damage conventional flooded batteries. AGM batteries are better suited for these and similar situations.
Maintenance Capabilities
Do you operate a large fleet with maintenance facilities? Or are you an owner-operator who completes minor repairs on their own and relies on garages for larger, more complex repairs and maintenance to their commercial vehicle?
Conventional flooded batteries, which require more maintenance but cost less, may be the choice for fleet operators. Smaller operations and owner-operators who drive cross-country may prefer AGMs, which require no maintenance.
When to Replace Your Heavy-Duty Battery
Whether you operate a family business with a few delivery trucks or a cross-border transportation company with a large fleet of tractor-trailers, you will eventually need to replace your batteries.
Most heavy-duty batteries last three to five years under normal operating conditions, though this varies based on usage demands, how often deep discharge cycles occur, and maintenance practices.
Keep an eye out for these indicators:
- slow cranking speed or hard starting signals, especially in cold weather
- headlights and other electrical components lose power when the vehicle is idling
- a defective alternator or starting motor has been replaced
- unusual difficulties with your vehicle's electrical systems
- visible damage, such as cracked cases, bulging sides, or heavy corrosion
Many of these symptoms indicate a battery replacement, so address them proactively.
