Features & Benefits
The IMS Retrofit Kit is the original replacement for the problematic intermediate shaft bearing in Porsche Boxster, 996, and early 997 models with the M96 engine. The IMS Retrofit intermediate shaft upgrade is to be used as part of preventative maintenance at recommended service intervals. The tools and procedure to replace the IMS bearing were developed and patented by Flat 6 Innovations and LN Engineering. They allow owners of Boxster and 911 models to replace their IMS bearing to prevent catastrophic IMS bearing failures.
Prior to the IMS Retrofit, the IMS bearing was a death sentence for most engines, with no parts or procedure to service the factory-sealed ball bearing. All Boxster and 996 vehicles from 1997 up to some early 2005 997.1 models are at risk of an IMS bearing failure, but fortunately, the bearing can be changed without engine disassembly. However, once the bearing fails, the engine must be torn down and rebuilt. If the failure is catastrophic, the engine must be replaced. Besides causing a loss of camshaft timing and valve-to-piston contact, resulting in bent valves, an IMS bearing failure can generate debris that spreads throughout the engine, causing collateral damage to other critical engine components. There is no way to ensure that there isn't damage to your engine after a failure without a complete teardown.
- Replaces a factory single-row IMS bearing with a dual-row ceramic hybrid ball bearing. Verify which bearing is needed before ordering.
- Engines from 1997–1999 are equipped with a dual-row bearing. Models from 2000–2001 can have a single- or dual-row bearing, so be sure to check which bearing your engine has first. Engines from 2002–2005 have a single-row bearing.
- Early 997 models with 2005 build dates may have the serviceable single-row bearing.
- Porsche 911, 997, and 987 Boxster and Cayman models from 2006 through 2008 have a larger, non-serviceable IMS bearing.
- Vehicles fitted with replacement engines will have whatever IMS bearing Porsche used for that production year.
- 2-year / 24,000-mile warranty
- 6-year / 75,000-mile service interval
