Different Types of Car Batteries

Conventional Car Batteries

Conventional car batteries are lead-acid batteries that are used to start and power the electrical systems of vehicles. They are made up of a series of lead plates submerged in a mixture of water and sulfuric acid, known as electrolyte. The lead plates are divided into two types: positive and negative. When the battery is discharging, a chemical reaction occurs that causes electrons to flow from the negative plate to the positive plate through an external circuit, producing electricity. When charging a battery with a car battery charger, the opposite process occurs, and the battery stores electrical energy. Conventional car batteries are relatively inexpensive and widely available, but they have a relatively short lifespan and are not as efficient as some other types of batteries.

Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are a type of sealed lead-acid battery that is commonly used in vehicles. They are like conventional lead-acid batteries, but they have a few key differences. One of the main differences is that AGM batteries use a fiberglass mat to separator the lead plates, which is soaked in electrolyte. This design helps to prevent the acid from escaping and allows the battery to be sealed, which makes them more resistant to leaks and spills. AGM batteries are also more efficient than conventional lead-acid batteries and they last a longer lifespan, making them a popular choice for many car owners. However, they tend to be more expensive than conventional batteries.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a car battery:
Battery Group Size: Make sure the battery you choose is the correct size for your vehicle. It refers to the length, width, and height of a battery, as well as the location of the terminals (positive and negative). There are several different group sizes used in the automotive industry, and the group size of a battery must match the size of the battery compartment in a vehicle for it to fit properly.

Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): Choose a battery with a CCA rating that meets or exceeds the minimum requirement for your vehicle. The CCA rating indicates a battery’s ability to start an engine in cold temperatures. It is defined as the number of amps a battery can deliver at 0°F for 30 seconds and maintain a voltage of at least 7.2 volts; a battery with a high CCA rating is more likely to start a vehicle in cold weather.

Reserve Capacity (RC): the RC rating of the battery indicates the battery’s ability to power a vehicle’s electrical systems in the event of an alternator failure. It is defined as the number of minutes a battery can sustain a minimum voltage of 10.5 volts while discharging at a rate of 25 amps, until the battery is completely drained. The higher the reserve capacity rating, the longer a battery can power a vehicle’s electrical systems.

Warranty: At NAPA, we offer a limited 60-month, 36-month, 24-month, 18-month, 12-month, 6-month, or 3-month warranty policy on select batteries for a free battery replacement when a defective battery is brought in with its original NAPA receipt.

Vehicle Use: Consider how you use your vehicle when selecting a battery. If you drive long distances frequently or have a lot of electrical accessories, you may need an AGM battery and a higher CCA and RC rating.

It’s also a good idea to check the owner’s manual for your vehicle to see if there are any specific battery recommendations or requirements.
