NAPA carries wet cell and AGM powersport batteries. The best powersport battery for you will depend on the type of vehicle you have. They all perform the same function, but the materials inside the battery are different and each one has its own pros and cons.
This conventional flooded lead-acid battery is the most accessible and affordable battery on the market. It holds the battery plates submerged in an electrolyte solution – a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. These batteries release hydrogen vent gas during charging or discharging, which causes some of the electrolyte mixture to evaporate. Thus, this type of battery does require some maintenance, namely checking the fluid level inside the battery and topping it up with distilled water to prevent the plates from sulfation. What’s more, conventional batteries tend to discharge faster than AGM batteries.
AGM stands for absorbent glass mat. These batteries are filled with battery acid and contain thin fibreglass mats between the lead plates that act like a sponge to cushion the battery. As a result, the battery can hold more battery plates and electrolyte solution to generate more power. AGM powersport batteries are also highly vibration-resistant, spill-proof, and maintenance-free. This dry cell battery has a higher energy capacity and lasts longer than conventional batteries, but it’s also more expensive than a wet cell battery.
