WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TRANSMISSIONS?

The transmission, sometimes referred to as the gearbox, is one of the most important parts of a vehicle. Simply put, the transmission transfers power from the engine to the wheels. There are many different types of transmissions, but the most common are manual transmissions, automatic transmissions, and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). Deciding which transmission is best for you depends on your driving style.

Manual transmission: Also called a stick shift, this type of transmission requires the driver to manually shift gears by operating a gear shifter and clutch pedal. A manual car uses a flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch to engage and disengage the transmission from the engine.

Automatic transmission: This type of transmission automatically shifts to change gears as the vehicle moves. An automatic transmission uses a torque converter and pump to push automatic transmission fluid into a turbine to spin the output shaft and transfer power.

Continuously variable transmission: A CVT doesn't involve shifting between preset gears. Instead, CVTs use two pulleys and a pushbelt, the diameter of which changes to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. Several Honda, Nissan, and Subaru vehicles use a CVT.

HOW TO CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL

  1. Making sure your vehicle is parked on a level surface, start your engine and let it warm up.
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick, typically found near the transmission or transaxle. Make sure it's not the engine oil dipstick. If you can't find the transmission dipstick, it's likely that your vehicle doesn't have one.
  3. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and then pull it out again.
  4. Check how high the transmission fluid comes up on the dipstick. If the transmission oil is below "low", you'll need to add transmission fluid.

Whether you have a manual transmission, automatic transmission, or CVT, your gearbox requires transmission fluid. However, automatic transmission fluid, or ATF, is distinctly different from fluid made for either manual transmissions or CVTs. ATF is available in Dexron III, Dexron VI, Mercon V, and ATF+4. The different kinds of manual transmission fluid are SAE 80W, 75W-90, 80W-90, and SAE 90. With CVTs, every transmission requires a specific transmission fluid.

Always remember to check your owner's manual for the type of fluid recommended for your vehicle by the manufacturer.
