WHAT DOES A CAR EXHAUST SYSTEM DO?

Ever wonder why some cars are so loud? The reason is their exhaust system.

There's more to a vehicle's exhaust system than the tailpipe that sticks out the back of the car. In fact, exhaust systems are crucial for reducing harmful vehicle emissions. Their components include the exhaust manifold (often called the exhaust pipe), the catalytic converter, the muffler, and the tailpipe.

A car's exhaust system serves four main purposes:

  1. To improve fuel consumption
  2. To improve and ensure engine performance
  3. To reduce noise produced by the internal combustion engine
  4. To carry gases away from the cabin

The purpose of the muffler is to dampen the noise produced during the fuel combustion process. Some cars also have a resonator built into their exhaust system that helps further reduce noise by cancelling out certain frequencies.

The last part of the exhaust system is the only visible one: the tailpipe (sometimes equipped with exhaust tips). The tailpipe sticks out from the car to release the exhaust gases produced by the engine.

WHAT COMES OUT OF A CAR EXHAUST SYSTEM?

Gasoline or diesel engine exhaust emitted from an internal combustion engine (ICE) exits via four cylinders that merge into a single pipe called the exhaust manifold. The manifold is connected to an oxygen (O2) sensor, which detects the level of oxygen in the exhaust so that the engine can adjust the amount of gasoline or diesel being burned to optimize combustion. A device called a catalytic converter helps limit pollution by reducing harmful emissions from the engine (the byproducts of the combustion process). It converts nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons into water vapour (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), and oxygen (O2).

If you have a diesel engine, your car's exhaust system also includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which is designed to remove diesel particulates.

PROBLEMS THAT REQUIRE CAR EXHAUST SYSTEM REPAIRS

If your car exhibits any of the following symptoms, consult a professional to diagnose the cause and avoid further damage to your vehicle:

  • Noisy and loud exhaust.
  • Smell of gasoline from exhaust.
  • Decrease in power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency.
  • Hanging, dragging, banging or knocking from exhaust parts hitting the floor.

Do not ignore these signs, as they can indicate serious problems and even expose you to deadly gas emissions. If you have questions or concerns about your car's exhaust system, visit your closest NAPA AUTOPRO service centre to get advice from our professionals.
